New push to protect penguin speciesPosted Sun Apr 5, 2009 12:34pm AEST
The effort to save Tasmania's iconic Little Penguin is expanding with new guidelines compiled to manage their habitats.
The Little Penguin is the smallest in the world and it calls Tasmania's Derwent Estuary home.
The number of breeding pairs has doubled in the past four years to about 180. Coordinator of the Derwent Estuary Program, Fiona Wells, says they've been working to minimise the effect of encroaching urban areas.
"Like improving revegetation at sites, putting in artificial burrows," Ms Wells said.
She says the program's findings will now be shared.
"Get groups to be aware of the issues that they face, the threats that they face," she said.
The new management guidelines are available for councils, planners, landowners and community groups like coast care and land care.
