City of Victor Harbor mayor Graham Philip has launched an online petition to help raise awareness of the little penguins and the plight to save them.

Mr Philp is calling on the state government to initiate a breeding program of local little penguins from identified populations to ensure longevity of their unique DNA and to enhance their survival as a sub species.

He is also asking the government to introduce a management plan and implement strategies for the control of the New Zealand Fur Seals in South Australia, to reduce the impact on the marine environment.

Mr Philp said the little penguin colonies on Kangaroo Island are under threat with the main colonies at Penneshaw and Kingscote declining in numbers. "Scientists have identified that the highest risk factor to little penguins in the areas off Granite Island and Kangaroo Island is the rapid increase of New Zealand fur seals in these areas," he said. "In the region off Victor Harbor the Penguin colonies on West Island and Wright Island are extinct. The colony on Granite Island is now in the low 20’s."
