On Saturday, Department of Conservation worker Denise Goodman was alerted by a member of the public who found the bird and arrangements were made to transport it to the Massey University Wildbase Hospital in Palmerston North for treatment.
Goodman said the penguin had an injury to its neck and was struggling to breathe when it was rescued. However, when she made inquiries about its health on Monday, she was told it had died.
She said a necropsy would be requested to find out what caused the penguin's death.
