Oamaru penguin causes controversy

Oamaru's penguin may be nesting only temporarily at the blue penguin colony.

The Oamaru stone penguin graced the Thames-Severn-Coquet Sts intersection on State Highway 1 for more than a decade but was moved to the colony on May 22 as part of relandscaping the centre of town after a $3.2 million road safety project.

But its migration has caused controversy, and some believe it should have been left where it was.

Now, Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton is considering whether the penguin should stay at its new home or be shifted again somewhere on SH1 where it can advertise Oamaru as a penguin town.

Mr Familton said yesterday he had had differing comments about moving the penguin, ranging from people who believed it should not have been shifted to those who felt it was now inappropriate on what had become a "memorial site".

"We have the Boer War monument and the McAdam memorial (to Dr K. McAdam who instigated the planting of the "McAdam Avenue" double row of trees along Severn St) and some people believe the site should not be cluttered up," he said.
