South African penguins Brenton, Pete and Jahzara gather for their morning feeding at the California Academy of Sciences. Brenton has figured out that it is more productive for him to take fish directly from the bucket than to wait for his share from the keeper.

They are cute and always ready for a formal occasion. The South African penguins are understandably one of the most popular attractions at the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. Comfortably ensconced and easy to see in the African Hall, the penguins are especially animated during their 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. mealtimes. Watch the birds dip and dive in their tank as a biologist dons a wet suit and hands out vitamin-stuffed herring and capelin. Each feeding takes 10 minutes and questions are encouraged.
Children who want to learn more about these intriguing animals should attend the Penguin Show & Tell every Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 p.m. This chance to meet Pierre, Howard, Ocio and the rest of the African penguin colony is specifically designed for children ages 12 and under. Free after museum admission.

The California Academy of Sciences is located at 55 Music Concourse Drive in Golden Gate Park. Free admission on the third Wednesday of every month, courtesy of The Bernard Osher Foundation, is on a first come, first served basis, and early arrival is recommended due to the likelihood of high demand. For information call (415) 379-8000 or visit www.calacademy.org.
