WHEN four-year-old Rosie Lumb dropped her favourite necklace into the penguin enclosure at Dalton zoo, she was devastated.

However, her tears soon disappeared when one “flippery” friend took a shine to the lost piece of jewellery and decided to try the accessory on for itself.
A Humboldt penguin dived to the bottom of the pool where the necklace had fallen and cheekily slipped it on.
Rosie and a crowd of amazed tourists watched as the penguin proudly paraded its new accessory around the enclosure, with Rosie’s grandfather, Mike McGill, able to take a photo of the commotion.
The fashion-minded bird played with the necklace, slipping it on and off as it swam.
Mr McGill said: “Rosie was quite a bit upset when she dropped her necklace from the overhead walkway. We all peered over and were amazed to see a penguin wearing it.
“We watched in amazement as it swam happily around, sometimes slipping it off but then retrieving it from the pool bottom and showing it off to everyone.
“It was brilliant and really cheered her up.”
Mr McGill, from Windermere, had taken Rosie and her twin, Kiki, to South Lakes Wild Animal Park last Sunday for a family day-out.
The twins, who live in Scales, near Ulverston, were reunited with the penguin yesterday, with the lovable bird trying on Kiki’s pink heart necklace this time.
Karen Brewer, park marketing manager, said all that was left of the necklace from the day were small remnants.
She said: “Our penguin keeper, Fiona, spotted some broken bits and string at the bottom of the pool at the end of the day. It was a bit of a mystery at the time!”
Mum Rachael Lumb said her daughter hasn’t stopped talking about the penguin for days.
“Rosie was really upset at first but she was just really pleased that the penguin loved her necklace too.
“She keeps mentioning how the penguin must be so happy to wear it.”
