Environmental benchmarking company supports Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony
EarthCheck,
the environmental benchmarking service for the travel and tourism
industry, is adopting a blue penguin from the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony
in New Zealand.
The blue penguin – the world’s smallest species of penguin – will become the new EarthCheck mascot. The adoption is aimed at supporting the Colony’s conservation efforts. “Adopting a blue penguin helps the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony provide nesting boxes and a safe environment for the blue penguins during the breeding season,” explained Philippa Agnew, resident marine biologist at the South Island facility. “One of the adoption options also helps fund a GPS tracking device, which helps us to monitor where the penguins feed at sea and gather more information about them. “Without public support, we would know less about penguins. Every piece of information we collect is important and contributes to our conservation efforts,” she added.
EarthCheck will now run a competition to choose a name for the blue penguin. Those interested in participating can visit earthcheck.org/mascot.
