KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
The Kansas City Zoo is celebrating Earth Day with the addition of a Humboldt penguin chick.
Hatched on April 12, the chick is getting bigger and stronger every day, zoo officials say. It currently weighs .72 pounds.
Experienced parents, Beatriz and Vito, are taking good care of the chick in a nesting box inside the exhibit. However, at this time it is not visible to the public.
Zoo officials are working to save the vulnerable species by being a part of a captive breeding program as well as making a difference in their native habitat.
The Kansas City Zoo, along with team members from the Brookfield Zoo and the St. Louis Zoo, are part of the Humboldt Penguin Consortium which supports a Peruvian reserve located in Punta San Juan, Peru.
As much as 40 percent of the world's Humboldt penguin species live in Punta San Juan.
