penguin news

Alt

The Little Penguin breeding season is nearing its end. The chicks that hatched last year are nearly fully grown with waterproof feathers. Most of them have gone out to sea for the first time on their own (we call this fledging). The young Little Penguins usually swim westward along the Victorian coast towards South Australia. Some adventurous penguins have been found a far as 1000 kilometres away, moving with ocean currents in search of food! These first year penguins spend the entire year at sea, returning to the colony until they are ready to moult.

we should be so lucky

Penguins not on the menu!
Researchers at the Penguin Parade

have found no evidence of Little Penguins in the diets of Australian Fur Seals. However this compares to their neighbours the New Zealand Fur Seals which find little penguins a juicy treat. Penguin Ambassador
