Montgomery Zoo Announces
Two African Black-footed Penguin Hatchlings

There is excitement at The Montgomery Zoo with the hatching of two Black-footed Penguins.  The eggs were laid on December 19, 2009 and December 22, 2009.  After a maternal incubation period of 39 and 40 days respectively, the eggs hatched January 27th and January 31, 2010.

The chicks named Pen and Guin are growing and doing well because of the care given by their devoted parents. The chicks will be in the nest until mid-April.   You should be able to begin seeing to chicks out of the nest with the rest of the colony beginning around April 11--18, 2010.  After their  initial debut the chicks will be out daily near the African Elephant exhibit pending any severe weather conditions or health related issues.
The Montgomery Zoo currently houses three male and three female penguins. The penguin exhibit is located at the corner of the double decker viewing station at the African Elephant exhibit.

The Black-footed penguins are native to the rocky beaches of South Africa and do quite well in our Central Alabama habitat.  They reach breeding maturity typically at four years of age.   Penguins breed in nesting colonies with the same mate for life.  Generally, they use the same nest every year.  Penguins typically lay eggs twice a year and the parents share equally in attending the nest.
