Singapore Penguin Gets a Wetsuit of His Own

A Photoblog by Roslan Rahman/AFP/Getty Images

A featherless Humboldt penguin  in a wetsuit walks past others in the enclosure at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore. His condition is similar to the San Francisco penguin that a few years ago, lost his own feathers. As penguins rely on those feathers for insulation, the loss of them means that a substitute is necessary; without that wetsuit, this little guy could not go into the water. In the wild, the feather loss would be fatal, as the penguin could not feed; however, thanks to inventiveness and a little technology, captive penguins can do just fine... just like this Humboldt penguin--regardless of the stares by his pen mates.
