A blue penguin affected by the oil leaking from grounded Rena has today taken its first swim after being washed.
The penguin was coated in oil before the wildlife response team cleaned it up.
Canola oil is initially used to break down the thicker, gunky oil which has leaked from Rena. Sunlight dishwashing liquid is then used to finish off the job.
Despite being cleaned up, the penguin and other birdlife have to waterproof their feathers again before being released, which can take weeks.
This blue penguin took to the water well, delighting those watching on.
