18th birthday celebrations for Pingu the penguin

18th birthday celebrations for Pingu the penguin

2:30pm Tuesday 21st April 2009

THERE will be celebrations at Dudley Zoo on Friday, as one of its rarest penguins comes of age and celebrates his 18th birthday.

Pingu is the great, great, great, great grandfather of the zoo’s 60-strong colony of highly endangered Humboldt’s penguins and was one of the original five penguins which kicked off the breeding programme in the 1990s.

Zoo Curator, Matt Lewis, said: “The original group had to be reared by hand to guarantee survival, but now we have one of the largest parent-reared colonies in Europe and birds from our collection have helped start Humboldt’s families across the UK.”

Matt added: “It’s quite a celebration this weekend as Pingu’s birthday is just one day before World Penguin Day so we shall be carrying over the festivities.”

Pingu and his family will celebrate his birthday with a special fish breakfast.
