PAMPERED PENGUINS: A little blue penguin rescued from Browns Bay is taken for a daily swim in rock pools with his friends by volunteer Annwyne Standish.

He’s only a little guy but he has a big appetite for expensive fish.
A baby penguin recently rescued from Browns Bay beach gobbles his way through $20 worth of gurnard a week.
Multiple that by the three other hungry mouths to feed and that’s a big fish bill to pay each week, says North Shore bird lady Sylvia Durrant. But cheap tinned fish simply won’t do.
The young rescued penguins need fresh firm fleshed fish.
Not only do they get good food, the penguins are also taken by volunteer Annwyne Standish for a daily dip in a rock pool at Campbells Bay.
Mrs Durrant says the baby penguin was found by a family on Browns Bay beach being chased by a dog.
The penguin is about six months old and must have been born very late in the season, she says.
A penguin is usually old enough to fend for itself when its parents head off to moult but the baby found at Browns Bay was just too young.
Mrs Durrant says it seems to be a trend this year because a number of dead baby penguins have been found in the Far North.
She would appreciate any donations towards her fish bill.
A Browns Bay fish shop kindly gives her a 50 percent discount.
