Two lovestruck penguins are p-p-p-puckering up this Valentine's Day after being shot by cupid's arrow in Pembrokeshire. Humbolt penguins Rocky and Poppy first set eyes on each other after moving to Folly Farm Adventure Park in April last year. Since being moved to the attraction for the opening of the Penguin Coast exhibit they have become completely smitten with each other, staff at the park said.
Catrin Thomas, Penguin Keeper at Folly Farm said: “Ever since they arrived at Folly Farm last Easter, Rocky and Poppy have shown a soft spot for each other. "Rocky was originally from Newquay Zoo and Poppy came from a zoo in France, so he has obviously been taken by her French charm. “They often waddle around the enclosure together and sit on the rocks sunbathing next to each other. Now that it is nesting season all of the penguins will be seeking a home in the nesting boxes within the enclosure and then settling in for mating season. We are sure Rocky and Poppy will pair off and make a home together.”
But it seems that Rocky has a tough job ahead finding a suitable home for his penguin love.
According to staff the male penguins find a home, then once he has settled in and made it liveable it is Poppy's decision whether she wants to live there or not.
Catrin added: “If Rocky and Poppy pair off, it is very likely that they will mate and produce offspring in time for Easter. “It is always nice when the animals find a partner, and they often remain together for the rest of their lives. We will keep everyone posted on how their relationship develops but in the meantime we will help them mark Valentine’s Day this February with some special treats.”
