Penguins Mauled by Dogs Again

Dog warning after penguins mauled

The RSPCA is investigating an incident in which seven penguins were killed in Tasmania's north-west.

The dead penguins were found on West Ulverstone Beach on Christmas Eve and appear to have been mauled by dogs.

RSPCA chief executive Greg Tredinnick says councils can euthanise pets which kill other animals but his group does not support that policy.

"It's the owners of the animals that should be held responsible," he said.

"There are certain processes through the court system that they can be taken down and some pretty hefty fines. That's what we'd like to see; that owners or anyone that's not properly confining their animals are dealt with appropriately by the courts."

He has urged dog owners to keep them contained at home over the festive season.

"The basics of responsible animal ownership is to make sure they're contained to keep the animals themselves safe."

"But when you're talking dogs and cats, if they get out of a yard, they can do some pretty horrific damage, like they have done in this case to the penguins.

"So, number one message is 'keep your animals contained'," he said.
