GALVESTON, Texas – This just in from the Dept. of Awwww: Moody Gardens has welcomed the first penguin chick of this year’s breeding cycle!
The Gentoo penguin chick hatched on December 29, weighing in at 90 grams.
The baby is healthy and is on exhibit with its mother at the Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid.
The sex of the chick won’t be known until biologists run blood tests.
"Right now the chick is tiny and nesting under its mother," said Diane Olsen, assistant curator at Moody Gardens. "It really is an adorable little bundle of fuzz."
The typical breeding cycle for Gentoo penguins runs from October to December. Olsen said Moody Gardens could see more Gentoo eggs hatch this month, as well as some King penguin eggs.
If you’d like to see the penguins, just head to the Moody Gardens Aquarium Pyramid any day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
You can also check out the playful birds online, thanks to the penguin cam. Click here to take a look!
