MIRACLE penguin Katrina's only way home could be to hitch a ride on a vessel, and be released off the south island of New Zealand.

The lone Fiordland Penguin was swept 3000km across the Tasman to the South-East last month.
She has been recovering at the Torrens Island headquarters of the Australian Marine Wildlife Research and Rescue Organisation.

Carer Aaron Machado was granted a three-month permit for Katrina, but Taronga Zoo was to take possession of her because it has a lone male.

"The New Zealand policy is for wild release but we can't pay for the airfare back so the only option may be to release her close to home," Mr Machado said.
