LOOKING DOWN: A penguin spotted near a Timaru breakwater could be moulting.
The walker noticed the yellow-eyed penguin over two days near the breakwater at Evans Bay.
Department of Conservation ranger Steve Harraway said it could be that the penguin was moulting, giving the appearance of being unwell. "They can look at bit sorry for themselves."
He said that DOC was the first point of call for anyone who came across a protected species, including penguins, that was unwell or injured,
It was helpful to give rangers a good description of the animal or bird, and any injuries it might have.
