Miracle rules roost of penguin babes

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Ocean Park is bursting with newborn penguins - 21 were hatched in the 2013/2014 breeding season, making it the busiest year. They include one king, one southern rockhopper and 19 gentoo penguins.

Park chairman Allan Zeman said: "The birth of a female king penguin chick last year was particularly memorable as it was miraculously hatched from an egg with a broken shell. "Thanks to the timely and attentive care of the animal keepers and veterinarians, she was successfully hatched within our in-house incubator and is now thriving under the care of her parents. Our penguin team named her Miracle to mark her remarkable hatching."

Curator of Polar Adventure Philip Wong said: "As penguins are usually monogamous, we expect many of the new parents will pair up again during future seasons."
