Jen Kottyan, the Maryland
Zoo's avian collection and conservation manager, shows how to do the
penguin pose
(Handout / September 15, 2014)'
What would it take to get you to pose like a penguin and share it for everyone on the interwebs to see?
It's worth contemplating because the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore is celebrating the opening of its new Penguin Coast -- which will let visitors get more up close and personal with the penguins -- with a promotion that will culminate with one person winning a lifetime family membership to the zoo.
The "Penguins for Life" contest runs today through Oct. 31, and the new exhibit opens on Sept. 27.
"We are asking people take a photo of themselves doing the 'penguin pose.' which is to stand with your wrists on your hips, with your fingers spreading forward," Timm Baldwin, director of marketing at the zoo, said in a statement. "This pose is actually the American Sign Language sign for penguin, which we think is really dynamic."
Photos can be posted the zoo's Facebook page (facebook.com/marylandzoo), to Twitter (@marylandzoo) or on Instagram with the hashtag #PenguinsForLife. Baldwin said an independent web app will track the entries and choose a winner.
An annual family membership to the zoo (2 adults plus up to four kids) is $112, so winning a lifetime membership could save a family some serious cash.
