Rochester, NY (WROC)- Area schools may have the day off for Columbus Day but that's not stopping kids from learning something new. Many students flocked to the Seneca Park Zoo for Penguin Awareness Day.
Kids can learn about the zoo's african penguin breeding program as well as challenges the penguin's face in their natural habitat. The event included a penguin feeding demonstration, along with a behind-the-scenes tour with the zoo's penguin colony.
"We don't spend enough time telling people the work we do to save penguins in the wild," said Pamela Reed-Sanchez of the Seneca Park Zoo. "We are very succesful at breeding. We've bred over 104 since 1996."
The Penguin Awareness Day event was free with regular zoo admission.
