There's something about cold weather and the snow that makes kids think about penguins.

The Lehigh Valley Zoo has chosen the wintry weekends in January to spotlight its new penguin exhibit.

Although these black-footed birds are from Africa and more used to hot weather, zoo officials say the penguins have already adapted to our local climate.

The zoo is hosting Big Splash weekends featuring crafts and educational activities about penguins 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and Jan. 17, 18, 24 and 25.

Meet the friendly flock at feeding time at the Jaindl Penguin Pavilion, 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily.

Hear about all types of birds at live animal presentations, learn to slide and waddle like penguins, make a penguin cookie or craft and discover how feathers work. Programs are free with admission and visitors are asked to bring a canned food item to donate to the Allentown Ecumenical Food Bank.

Zoo hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for kids. Info: 610-799-4171, ext. 238 or http://www.lvzoo.org .
