SAN DIEGO — Thirty penguins have been born at SeaWorld since early November – one of the most successful breeding seasons for the Antarctic birds in the marine park's history, a spokeswoman said.

Among the fluffy brood are seven macaroni penguins; six gentoo; and 17 Adélies, said park spokeswoman Kelly Terry.

There are 17 species of penguins.

Some of the chicks are being raised by their parents in the 25-degree Penguin Encounter exhibit, while others are being hand-raised in the park's nursery.

The chicks, which weigh a few ounces when they are born, reach full size – between eight and 12 pounds – by three months old, Terry said.

Since 1980, more than 500 penguins have been born at SeaWorld.
