Access to Penguin Island has been closed due to rough seas and high winds.
Rough seas close Penguin Island walk * Chris Thomson
* January 6, 2009
The popular sand bar walk between the Rockingham mainland and Penguin Island has been closed thanks to forecast high tides and strong sea breezes.
The Department of Environment and Conservation has banned pedestrian access to the sandbar from today until Friday.
In 2008, several people had to be rescued after being swept off the sand bar.
The bar is a popular way for surfers and day trippers to access the limestone island, named after its fine feathered inhabitants.
The department advised strong sea breezes would make waters choppy.
Visibility of the sand bar through the water would also be difficult.
Water would also be deeper than usual, with strong currents possible.
Holiday-makers keen to see the penguins can still catch the regular ferry service that runs between Mersey Point and the island. More information on the ferry can be gleaned from Rockingham Wild Encounters on 9592 3464.
