Dog, penguin deaths unrelated

Tests have found the deaths of dogs and penguins on Auckland's northern beaches are unrelated.

Several dogs were killed, while others become very sick, after eating washed up sea slugs.

Around the same time, dead penguins, fish and dolphins were also discovered.

John Potter form the Centre of Conservation Medicine has preformed post-mortem examinations on seven of the penguins and says they all starved to death.

Potter says that could be linked to the fish deaths, but it's more likely to be a natural occurrence.

The Department of Conservation is still working to establish what killed the dolphins.
