A Christchurch photographer's image of a yellow-eyed penguin has made the finals of a big nature photography competition.
Andy Trowbridge, of Halswell, is among 89 finalists in the competition, covering Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea, run by the South Australian Museum.
A record 1540 entries were received.
Trowbridge said he crept up on the penguin at Katiki Point, near Oamaru, to get the shot.
"By moving very slowly and crawling, I was able to get very close as it tried to find a way through the barbed-wire fence," he said.
The winners of the competition will be announced on October 1.
