Coast erosion threatens penguins

Oamaru's little blue penguins are in danger of losing their habitat if coastal erosion continues, forcing them to live in dangerous environments, a report has found.
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony (OBPC), in the Oamaru harbour, employed biologist Philippa Agnew last year to carry out a three-year research project looking at where the penguins journey to on their quest for food and what they do.
In her latest research report on the 2010 breeding season, which focuses on foraging behaviour, reproductive performance and population growth, she said there was potential for losing some colonies. Further investigation was urgently required, she said.
"Our real concern for the future of little penguins in Oamaru is the potential loss of the Oamaru Creek colony," she said in the report.
"If no protection or extension of the creek colony is undertaken, this colony will be lost to the ocean.
"If this happens, the penguins that reside there – approximately 500 – will search for nesting habitat in the nearest possible site, which is the historic precinct in [the] Oamaru township. Such movement will increase their vulnerability to cars and dog attacks, and will put that entire population at risk."
She also reported the scientific credibility of the OBPC was increasing with the establishment of an Otago University research programme, an ongoing monitoring programme and growing relationships with other penguin biologists.
"This credibility will only improve in the future and will continue to be recognised internationally."
The 2010 breeding season was successful for the penguins and although the populations at the Quarry and Creek did not increase in size, the breeding data showed that they will continue to increase in numbers in the future.
Ms Agnew started her research in June last year. Her work will go towards a PhD in marine biology.
The project is set down for three years so it can document three complete breeding cycles.
