Little Penguins

Little Penguins

The Little or Fairy Penguin is found only in Southern Australian and New Zealand waters and is described as being the smallest of all penguins - and the noisiest.

As we humans demand more and more of their desired living space, it has proved necessary to build them man-made burrows where they can nest in safety.

The Friends of Lillico Penguins have done just that, with their carefully-constructed blending in well with the rocky beach.

There are many penguin colonies in Tasmania but Your Afternoon's Elaine Harris ventured out to Lillico on a chilly evening recently - their brochure advises patrons to dress warmly, "Especially children and Queenslanders".
The volunteers forming the Friends of Lillico Penguins offer a guiding and interpretation service from October 1st to March 31st each year. The reserve is closed for the other half of the year.
For your nearest penguin colony and viewing service, check with Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, especially during their annual Summer Rangers' programme.
