Live Penguins on Display in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Right now the Science Spectrum is home to live penguins who will be spending the next 4 months in the Hub City.

It's all part of a 4 month exhibit called The Penguin Plunge.
The four penguins come to Lubbock from a Gulfarium in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Senior Trainer, Rachel Cain, brought the penguins to Lubbock and helped to get them set up in their temporary home.

"Most of the species of penguins are warm blooded species. So, as they come here, they might expect snow and ice that these penguins are going to be living on. But, that's not the case at all," Cain said.

While Cain helped prepare the penguins, it was up to the Science Spectrum to set up everything else.

"They prepare everything for them here. They give them food, the habitat is all nice and set up. They also provide them enrichment and toys," Cain said.

From now through June 15, the penguins will be on display at the Science Spectrum. The exhibit will allow visitors to see the penguins up close and personal, both on land and in the water.

"This is a great exhibit because it allows them to see the penguins in their rocky terrain as well as the great view of being able to see them under water in the aquatic environment," Cain said.

Since there are no zoos or large bodies of water in Lubbock, Cain believes Lubbock residents will especially appreciate the exhibit because it's unlike anything the city has had.

Organizers say this is the first time penguins have been on exhibit in the Hub City.

"People are always willing to learn about these animals. So, they really do come out in large groups so they can see, and learn, and experience," Cain said.
