REPAIR WORK: Stuart Dellow, left, Shanan Beecroft and Kevin Moore repair damage to the penguin barrier at Caroline Bay. High tide and winds caused by Cyclone Lusi have washed out 20 metres of the penguin barrier at Caroline Bay.
The barrier was constructed to protect the blue penguins that inhabit the beach. "The barrier is a 2.5-metre high tensile fixing wire and it stops people from walking with their dogs and disrupting the penguins," Timaru District Council work scheme supervisor Kevin Moore said. The barrier was buried under sand after the storm and needed to be dug out. "We had to make the barrier 20 metres short, but we rebuilt it," Mr Moore said.

The penguins remain unaffected.

Mr Moore said the beach was "quite dynamic" and changed with the winds and tides but the penguins were smart and could deal with the changes. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to prevent this happening again, Mr Moore said.
