Torquay, UK - The first macaroni penguin of the year has been hatched at Living Coasts.
The egg hatched at around lunchtime on Monday 23rd May to a new breeding pair, male Babe and female Mrs. Red Black.
The macaroni penguins can be seen on their own rocky beach opposite
the African penguin beach. The two species of penguin roam free inside
Living Coasts and are fed in the public area. There is a penguin talk at
10:30am and a feed at 2:30pm.
Babe is 5 and was himself hatched at Living Coasts. Mrs. Red Black
(named after her identification rings) was previously with another male
but produced infertile eggs.
Keepers are hoping for up to 6 macaroni penguin chicks in all this season. For more information go to www.livingcoasts.org.uk or ring 0844 474 3366.
