John Ball Zoo penguins get annual check-ups

Penguins at the John Ball Zoo receive annual check-ups.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Some of the most popular attractions at the John Ball Zoo are getting their yearly check-ups.

All 31 penguins at the zoo got their annual physicals Thursday.

In addition to evaluating the birds' health, staff at the zoo installed microchip transponders to help identifty the penguins.
It's all part of an exhaustive process that the zoo takes pride in.

"It gives an example of how intense our program of veterinary care is, and how important the health and well-being of each one of these animals is to us, to you as the community, to know the animals in your zoo are getting the best possible care they can have," says Barb Snyder, the zoo's general curator.

Snyder says the zoo does the same thing for all of its other types of animals.
