P-P-P-PENGUIN: Stars of The Zoo, Adrian Walls and Ricky the rockhopper penguin
Adrian Walls is head of the bird section at ZSL London Zoo, which features in the brand new ITV1 documentary, The Zoo, a three-part series which offers viewers behind-the-scenes access to the staff and animals.
But before he got what he now calls his ‘dream job’, he trained up at Merley Bird Gardens in Wimborne, now known as the Orangery Suite at Merley House, after leaving Ashdown Technology College aged 16.
Here, he gained all the knowledge he needed about looking after his feathered friends, before using his experiences for a job at the world-renowned ZSL London Zoo.
Adrian said: “I’ve had a lifelong passion for birds, and I just can’t imagine working anywhere other than ZSL London Zoo.
“Having a film crew following you around takes some getting used to, but I love being able to talk about and share my dream job.”
Adrian manages the large team of bird keepers at the zoo in Regent’s Park, where they look after more than 100 different species of birds from around the world.
Viewers will see Adrian in the first episode, which airs tonight, as he introduces a new group of young penguins to the colony at ZSL London Zoo’s Penguin Beach exhibition. The Zoo will be shown at 8pm on ITV1.
