The Environment Department says New Zealand fur seals shouldn't be soley blamed for dwindling penguin numbers on Kangaroo Island.

it's believed cats, rats, dogs and flooded burrows are also responsible for wiping out the birds.

The Kangaroo Island's Penguin Centre claims the seals are eating so many birds the colonies are sparse and small and will close its doors in November with as little as just 20 birds now being sighted during tours.

A decade ago penguin colony numbers were in the hundreds.

Centre owner John Ayliffe blames the fur seals and says the business is no long viable.

But BILL Haddrill from the Environment Department says further claims the fur seals will affect Australia sea lion numbers is incorrect and its unfair the fur seals have been given a bad reputation.
