LONG BEACH – A penguin chick at the Aquarium of the Pacific was christened Paddles this week after members of the community weighed in with their suggestions, aquarium officials announced.

The 5-month-old female chick is the offspring of penguins Noodles and Patsy and is one of four chicks at the aquarium. Two male and two female chicks were born at the Aquarium of the Pacific this summer and donors who participated in the aquarium’s Adopt an Animal program were invited to suggest a name for Paddles, said Alyssa Pacaut, Aquarium of the Pacific membership manager.

It is the first time the aquarium has opened up naming an animal to the sponsorship program. Two people who suggested the name Paddles will get to meet the penguin in person during a feeding and training session, Pacaut said.
