CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Penguins are returning to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo after a 13-year absence.
Six African black-footed penguins will occupy a new exhibit in the zoo's Northern Trek area beginning April 3.

Their stay will be longer than a visit, but less than a permanent arrangement. The aquatic birds, on loan from the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, are expected to leave in September.

The Grin 'n' Bear Eats concession stand will be transformed to resemble a South African seaport, according to a press release from the zoo. These penguins are native to the frigid waters off the coast of South Africa, and their exhibit will be next to the reconfigured concession stand.
That will also be the site of a live-animal show where, several times a day, conservation-education staff members will display birds, snakes and small mammals from their collection.

Dr. Chris Kuhar, the zoo's executive director, said the penguin exhibit is timed to coincide with Sustainable Cleveland's Year of Clean Water.
Kuhar said the zoo used to have a mixed-species exhibit of penguins that included Humboldt, macaroni and king penguins in the Birds of the World exhibit.

The birds left when the exhibit closed in 2002. The zoo's new carousel now occupies that space.
Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is $13.25 per person, $9.25 for kids ages 2 to 11 and free for children younger than 2 and Zoo members. There is no additional fee for access to the Penguin Shores exhibit. Parking is free.
