UPDATE: DESPITE
every effort of volunteers at Australian Seabird Rescue to nurse Little
Penguin Ferdinand back to health, it wasn't enough.
The juvenile penguin passed away from infection around midday on Saturday.
Australian Seabird Rescue general manager Kathrina Southwell said the team was devastated little Ferdinand didn't make it.
"We did everything we could," she said.
"He succumbed to infection in the end.
"From about 5.30am on Saturday morning, he just started going downhill from there.
"We think it was internal infections."
Ms Southwell said volunteers learnt a lot from having an unusual marine
bird like a penguin in care, even if it was for a relatively short
time.
She said even after 15 years of work with Seabird Rescue, losing an animal doesn't get any easier.
INITIAL REPORT: AUSTRALIAN Seabird Rescue have shared the sad news that rescued penguin Ferdinand died over the weekend.
"Sad news. Our Little Penguin passed away at midday today," the rescue group said on their Facebook page on Saturday.
"We did everything we could to save him but in the end it wasn't to be.
"Thank you to all of the volunteers for their hard work with the little one, we will miss you Ferdinand, rest in peace."
The Little "fairy" Penguin was found injured and hiding among rocks on a
Brunswick Heads beach with a large wound on his back and puncture
wounds on his belly, said to be caused by a dog bite.
