THE crew on the Aurora Australis icebreaker has taken heart-warming snaps of a penguin grooming a stuffed toy.
The adventurers handed the Adelie penguin a stuffed toy in the Antarctic and watched in awe as it snuggled with it.
They also made a carving in the ice of the figure 100 in celebration the centenary of Australian explorer Douglas Mawson.
In fine weather, the team was flown by helicopter across 20km of sea ice from the Aurora Australia this morning.
Cloud and fog has prevented the party from reaching the huts for the past three days.
The team, led by Australian Antarctic Division director Tony Fleming, gathered outside Mawson's hut for the ceremony as Adelie penguins wandered about from their nearby rookeries.
The huts are nestled among rocks that are the few stretches of land exposed on Commonwealth Bay.
