'Jaws' the penguin is happy, fat and back on track

SWIMMERS feeling safe enjoying Port Phillip Bay in the absence of any recent shark sightings probably had not reckoned on coming across a pesky penguin named "Jaws".

The bird with a dodgy sense of direction was washed ashore at Altona.

Altona Vet Clinic chief Rod Sharpin said Jaws was probably on a training swim from the St Kilda penguin colony and became separated.

Malnourished and underweight, Jaws is being fattened up on four fresh pilchards a day.

She also has regular multi-vitamin jabs and is force-fed a special high-fat diet and fluids.

Dr Sharpin said Jaws was being trained to swim and to dive to catch food in Hobson's Bay wildlife carer Mandy Hall's pool.

"But she either just floats around or rests up on the creepy crawly hose and sleeps," he said.
