Sofia. Six Gentoo penguins have arrived at Sofia Zoo for a temporary stay, Sofia Zoo Director Dr Ivan Ivanov announced for FOCUS News Agency.

The birds arrived at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday with a special charter flight from a British zoo. The penguins are agend 6 to 10 months and are 60 cm to 80 cm tall.

“They are very beautiful with yellow beaks. These are classical pensions, which we have seen in the ice-cream commercials,” Ivanov explained.

The Gentoo penguins are the third largest species of penguin after the two giant species, the Emperor Penguin and the King Penguin.

“Our colleagues have placed stickers alarming that ‘these birds bite’. We used gloves to take them out. Each penguin was measured and checked – they have microchips,” the zoo chief commented further.

He added that the penguins adapted to the new environment very fast and rushed to the pool immediately.
The most important requirement for the breeding and keeping of these penguins is to avoid putting new objects in their cage, because they are very curious and they swallow everything they see.

“It is the first time we receive Gentoo penguins and we did not dare taking a big number,” Ivanov said.
The six penguins will be exposed at the Sofia Zoo for two months. After that they will be replaced with other eight and then other ten.
