VANCOUVER -- Vancouver Aquarium's seven African penguins received their names Tuesday following a month-long contest that received over 600 submissions from across B.C.
The seven names — all inspired by B.C. communities — are Lillooet, Tofino, Hope, Nelson, Steveston, Sechelt and Salt Spring.

The naming entries ranged from "incredible pieces of artwork and quirky written essays, to creative poems and original video submissions," according to an Aquarium news release. Many also discussed the importance of habitat conservation and the endangered status of African penguins.

"The naming contest has been extremely popular and we thank everyone who participated," Clint Wright, senior vice-president and general manager of the Vancouver Aquarium, said in the release.
"The panel of judges chose names that resonate both with the staff who work with the animals and with our visitors."

Contest winners will receive a one-year family membership to the Aquarium, and will be able to take three friends on a VIP penguin experience. Winners are Miriam Moysey (Lillooet), Krista Bratton (Tofino), Nicole Souza (Hope), Nelmarie Albert Nurhan Illuday (Nelson), Winnie Kwok (Steveston), Diana Luong (Sechelt) and Aris Murray (Salt Spring).
