SYRACUSE -- Malia and Calypso.

That's the winning names in the penguin chick naming contest at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse. The female chicks hatched in January to parents Mario and Montana. In total, 1,029 votes were cast online. The finalist names included: Alejandra, Calypso, Frida, Malia and Muchacha. According to the zoo, Malia was the top pick with 45% of the vote and Calypso came in second with 24%.

First graders at Webster Elementary School in Syracuse came up with the name Malia. The name Calypso was submitted by Elizabeth Young of Phoenix. The winners will each get a Humboldt penguin Adopt an Animal package.

The winning announcement was made Tuesday morning on Today in Central New York on NBC3.

The zoo says 961 name suggestions were submitted from across the United State and United Kingdom.
