Here’s what struck me when the king penguins paused just inches from my hands, soaking in the attention.
That patch of yellow on its neck is strikingly bright — a field of daffodils from afar.
The second largest penguin species in the world can add to its stature by stretching its neck, like a superpower.
And when the handlers say that the king penguins are much, much slower than gentoo penguins, they aren’t kidding.
Every weekend in February, the Kansas City Zoo is holding “penguin march” events outside its Helzberg Penguin Plaza.
On Feb. 7, a small flock of gentoo penguins were the first to go around the building. The handler said they like to run. It seemed more like an excited waddle, over in about 25 seconds. The flock did two more laps.
Then came the kings. Deliberately, they made their way and seemed to be enjoying the people lined up to watch them. These penguins did the same length in about twice the time it took the gentoos.
Watch the comparison video; then see for yourself. Through the end of the month, the zoo will hold penguin marches every Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m.
