GREENSBORO, N.C. - On Tuesday, the first pair of African penguin chicks born at the Greensboro Science Center made their public debut.
The penguins, named Deacon and Nelson, hatched in late August.
"The reason it takes them so long before we can actually bring them out on exhibit is because these guys are full of downy feathers all over their body," said Carmen Murray, senior keeper of birds and mammals. "So when you think of chicks, you think of them being sot and fuzzy and things like that. And for other chicks and other land birds, and birds that are flying, it's fine, but for these guys, they have to wait until they get their waterproofing feathers in before they can come out here and come swimming."
Deacon and Nelson might be young but they're not the youngest in the colony. Another penguin hatched October 29th.
Right now, it's getting it's swimming legs before joining the others.
