Two new penguin chicks at KC Zoo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Two new Gentoo penguin chicks are eating regurgitated herring and trout, building up their strength after they were just hatched this week. The first chick hatched on Monday and the second on Wednesday. The third egg is expected to hatch by the end of the year. The little ones are part of the Junior League of Kansas City, Mo., Penguin Ice Paradise. They will begin to get their feathers at about three months.

Gentoos are the third largest of the penguin species. Zoo guests may catch glimpses of them, but the chicks will most often be underneath the bellies of their parent. Both mother and father assist in the caregiving.
