Penguins Dive In At Scovill Zoo

Posted: Oct 16, 2013Decatur - They're here!

Penguins are now taking up residence at the new penguin habitat at Scovill Zoo in Decatur.  Six penguins have been delivered from other zoos across the country.  Four additional penguins will be flown into Chicago and transported to Decatur in the next few days.

Humboldt penguins are native to South America.  They breed in coastal Peru and Chile.  Humboldt penguins traditionally grow to be 22-28 inches long.  They usually weigh 8-13 pounds and live on a fish diet.

The new penguin exhibit cost about $1 million to build.  Future expansion, to allow the addition of otters and alligators, could take place in the future.

The public can get its first look at the penguins Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 18-20th, during the "Boo At The Zoo And Penguins Too" event.
