MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) - Mystic Aquarium says it has successfully treated one of its penguins for cancer.
The Connecticut aquarium says its colony of 31 African penguins is one of the largest in the United States and plays a key role in the preservation of the endangered species.
One of the penguins was treated with radiation after a tumor was found on its beak and it is doing well.
Veterinarians say they look forward to discussing the course of treatment with others in the field if the cancer stays in remission.
The penguins are believed to number less than 50,000 in the wild. Some 1,100 live in accredited zoos and aquariums.
